Interview Nathan James

Hi Nathan, could you introduce the band to our readers?

British classic blues rock band. Influenced by the greats and all about keeping it live!

Even though it's a new band, you guys aren't rookies, tell us how the band came together?

We have all played in various bands before this and been signed etc. I asked on social media for the best musicians that wanted to be in a band. Then I auditioned about 40 people 2 years ago and then after a couple of guitar hiccups we had the line up.

And why choosing Inglorious as a band name?

I like the fact it's one word...it looks great on a t-shirt and I liked the movie ...basterd's.

So first of all, let's sort this out. You made a wierd comment on Facebook following my review, which gave you a 16.5/20 and an album of the week. Not bad! What didn't you like about it?

You started off by saying about how you didn't want to even list it and said you thought i sang too much. I always think thats an unintelligent way to start an review. It's obviously a good album (you said so yourself) so would appreciate if you just got round to that bit. This way of singing has taken me over the world 100s of times and I've performed to millions of people. They can't all be wrong... I am really looking forward to hearing other singers cover some Inglorious tunes.

Now tell someone reads French in the band and you didn't use google translate, did you?

I got a girl to read it to me.

Ok, never mind. I really liked the album in which I can hear a lot of influences from the 70s. What, would you list as major influences for the sound of the band?

Whitesnake, Deep purple, Led Zep, Bad Company, Aerosmith.

It's kind of funny to hear such a 70s revival, with musicians most likely not even born at that time. Was this the golden age of rock 'n' roll?

I don't think it sounds like a revival. Maybe it's just because there is some actual talent in this band and on this album like the old days... The 70s was where it all began. I loved the 80s bands too but for me the creators will always be the best.

Did you decide on this sound upfront, when you created the band, or it happens to be what comes out of your mind when you write new music?

It made sense as it's what I like to sing. Soulful, bluesy riffs and big notes. We had a little help from our A & R guy Derek Shulman who signed Bon Jovi, Dream Theater etc.

How did you work to compose this first album?

We all wrote the songs, when I was away on tour in the US with the Trans Siberian Orchestra. Sending demos back and forward and then when I returned we got together and turned them all into songs.

I read somewhere that you didn't use any modern production technique. And I like that. Do you think that a lot of band do use things like overdub, autotune?

Yes. I believe that if you can't do it live you shouldn't do it in the studio.... I want people to love our album and love us even more live!

You also said tracks where recorded live. Did you need many takes? How does this work in a studio? Aren't you under time constraint typicaly?

We recorded at our managers studio so we had alot of time although the album took only 10 days to complete...and we recorded 22 songs.

I loved Holy Water, which is very bluesy. What the story behind this song?

I was inspired by the first lyric of David coverdale Northwinds album. And I wanted a song with a huge chorus that came out of nowhere. We wrote the song in about 45 minutes.

Is blues also a major influence?

Yes. I like it to be organic. I like it to never be exactly the same twice and I really enjoy simple chord progressions so I can move freely over them vocally.

I also was very impressed with your voice. Very different from track to track, for example on Wake, it's wild. Do you work hard to maintain this range, or it's just natural?

It's just my voice. I have trained for over 12 years and I know exactly what to do to make it sound different and keep it safe. I still see my voice coach now when I'm at home.

Anyways, I have found your album very addictive. The more I played it, the more I liked it. That the Inglorious effect?

I hope so! Means alot that you like it! Not bad for a debut album huh?

Are you guys going to support that album on the road now?

We are on the road with the Winery Dogs now and then we have our own UK dates aswell as well as some cool festivals.

Any dates in France?

Yes! Trabendo, I think this month! Gonna be great!

Any big festival in the summer planned yet?

Yes Ramblin Man in the UK! We are opening the main stage the same day as Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake! Also talks of a french festival.

Other than that any other plans for the near future for Inglorious?

Touring, touring and we wanna start writing album 2 as soon as possible.

We heard you singing on Uli Jon Roth's Scorpions revisited Vol1. Are you going to participate in Vol2?

No.

Thanks a lot Nathan, hope to see you on stage soon

Please do! Come say hello!
