Interview Seuche (by mailer)

First of all, thank you for your attention, I’m glad to finally interview Fäulnis for a French Webzine !

Fortunately in English. I never learned French at school. I just gave it a try for half a year and everything we talked about was food.

Fäulnis is not so famous in France in spite of your great songs, can you tell us the story of the band ?

"Born in 2003. Live on stage since 2009. one demo, two EPs and three albums brought by Seuche and the orchestra of terror. Cold and devastating BlackDoomPunkRock from the shores." Long story short but that's it.

Your last album, "Gehirn zwischen Wahn und Sinn" was very well received in 2009, what were your influences ?

Living in a big city (Hamburg), the everyday monotony of waking up, grey, concrete, subway, assholes, subway, concrete, grey, fall asleep. This in addition to my experiences for the last ten years. On "Cholerik: Eine Aufarbeitung" (2003, first demo) I was just fucked up and full of hate. On "Gehirn zwischen Wahn und Sinn" it was this feeling of advanced lethargy, void and numb.

"Snuff // Hiroshima", your new one, is more tormented and turbulent than the previous record, more violent too. Can you explain what the topics of your songs are this time ?

You answered the question by yourself with your first sentence. Our label Cold Dimensions wrote: "The songs are sick, cold and devastating. Expect nothing more than pure hate and misanthrophy!" Its a promo text, yes, but maybe it fits best. You just have to respect that Fäulnis has to be comprehensible at all, no childish suicide glorification, no blind-and-dumb-hate-on-everything. It's more about conflicts. The dark side of life. Something to think about. And in the end, if there is a message, you and you alone have to get on with it.

The first track of the album is named "Grauen", which means in "raise" in English. In "Gehirn zwischen Wahn und Sinn" the first song was "MorgenGrauen", "the dawn" in English. There is an obvious relation between the two, it’s a beautiful metaphor for a musical "introduction" isn’t it? Which emotions do you want to bring to your audience?

There is a little mistake in your translation but when I think about it it's an interesting one! I know what you mean with "Grauen/raise", but "Grauen" for itself is in fact "horror" or "terror" like in "to dread something.". BUT "MorgenGrauen" is a play on words with exactly these two meanings. The "raise" in "MorgenGRAUEN" connected with the meaning of Grauen = Terror. Maybe something like "The terror of dawn". But that is not the end, in "Grauen" you have "Grau = grey" and I use this very often as a metaphor for this feeling you may call depression. "Mit dem Morgen kam das Grau" (from Letharg), for example. Yes, and "Snuff // Hiroshima" has the opener Grauen. The song has more something like a snuff-theme with a twist but you are right, it is in relation to the opener of "Gehirn zwischen Wahn und Sinn".

Haha, but that was not your question although I really love these play on words! Which emotions I want to bring to our audience? It's simple, I want to bring emotions to our audience. Sounds too simple? Then think about the music industry today, is there any emotion ? Ok, Fäulnis is more concentrated on a negative perspective. Not this lame "please kill yourself", more this "yes of course a lot of stuff here is fucked up but deal with it!". No hope, but a soundtrack for it.

Does it mean that "Snuff // Hiroshima" is a concept-album?

Every Fäulnis album has more or less a concept. This time, contrary to "Gehirn zwischen Wahn und Sinn" which was more concentrated on the protagonist himself, I am dealing more with the whole thing, the nature of men among themselves.

German bands have demonstrated many times that German is a fantastic and astonishing language to sing and play Black Metal, and Fäulnis is one of them. Was this a deliberate and committed gesture from the band?

I can express myself best in my mother-tongue, that's all. First it was much easier to sing in English but when you are used to it, German language has so many possibilities. For example, your question to "MorgenGrauen". This kind of play on words is possible in every language, but you have to hit on it, you understand?

By the way, which bands inspire your music? And do you know some recent French bands?

There are lots of bands which inspire me, I am listening to music every day, it's a subconscious process. In times of "Gehirn zwischen Wahn und Sinn" I tried to control it and avoided listening to Black Metal for some months. Instead I listened to some German Punk from Hamburg or northern Germany which has a special atmosphere in my opinion. While writing "Snuff // Hiroshima" I don't know, it's a mixture of everything.

French bands: Deathspell Omega, Antaeus, sometimes Mütiilation.

I’ve never seen your band on stage, but after watching your last promo video "Weil wegen Verachtung", I think it would be great! Do you plan to do any dates in Europe and in France?
